Instructions
Materials
- A picture book featuring a story set in a different country or culture.
- A globe or a world map placed at the children's eye level.
- Three to four physical artifacts related to the story, such as a traditional fabric, a musical instrument, or a wooden toy.
- A soft rug or circle time seating arrangement.
- Large index cards with printed images of key characters from the book.
Learning Objectives
- Children will identify at least one cultural difference, such as clothing or food, depicted in the story.
- Children will practise active listening by responding to two or three guided questions during the reading.
- Children will demonstrate the ability to point to a location on a map or globe when prompted.
- Children will use new vocabulary words related to the story setting during group discussion.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Arrange the children in a semi-circle on the rug to ensure everyone can see the book illustrations.
2. Introduce the globe and point to the country where the story takes place, explaining that it is a long way from where the children live.
3. Show the physical artifacts to the children, allowing them to touch and describe the textures or shapes.
4. Begin reading the story at a slow, engaging pace, pausing frequently to point out details in the illustrations.
5. Ask open-ended questions such as, "What do you see the character eating?" or "How is this house different from yours?"
6. Use the character index cards to help children track who is speaking or acting in the story.
7. Encourage children to mimic a sound or gesture from the story to keep them physically engaged.
8. Conclude the reading by asking one child to point back to the country on the globe.
Educator Tip
If children become restless, shorten the story by focusing only on the pictures rather than reading every word of the text. You can extend this activity by leaving the artifacts in the dramatic play area for the remainder of the week to encourage independent exploration.
Assessment
- Observe if the child can point to the correct country on the globe after the story.
- Note whether the child contributes at least one observation about the story illustrations during the discussion.
- Record if the child uses the new vocabulary words introduced during the reading.
Assessment
Observe and note: ability to follow two-step instructions, use of new vocabulary in context, early problem-solving strategies, and sustained shared thinking episodes. Assess against Development Matters age-band expectations. Checklist: participation, correct identification, completion of task.
