French Flag & Language

Level 3 promotes critical thinking and structured analysis. 'French Flag & Language' strengthens global literacy and respectful cultural awareness.

Objectives

Instructions

Materials

- Rectangular cardstock templates divided into three vertical sections

- Blue, white, and red tempera paint or sugar paper scraps

- Glue sticks and child-safe scissors

- Printed labels with the French words for the colours: bleu, blanc, rouge

- A globe or world map highlighting France

- Audio recording of simple French greetings

Learning Objectives

- Identify France on a globe and recognise the tricolor flag pattern.

- Demonstrate fine motor control by cutting and pasting or painting within defined vertical boundaries.

- Associate the French words for blue, white, and red with their corresponding colours.

- Practise correct pronunciation of basic French vocabulary through choral repetition.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Gather the children in a circle and point to France on the globe. Briefly explain that people in France speak French.

2. Display a picture of the French flag. Ask the children to describe the colours and the vertical arrangement.

3. Play the audio recording of the colours. Have the children repeat the words bleu, blanc, and rouge aloud.

4. Distribute the cardstock templates. Explain that the flag is divided into three equal stripes.

5. Demonstrate how to apply paint or glue paper scraps to the left, middle, and right sections of the template.

6. Instruct the children to colour the left stripe blue, the middle white, and the right red.

7. Assist children in cutting out their finished flags if they are ready for scissor work.

8. Have each child glue the corresponding French labels under the correct colour stripes on their flag.

9. Invite the children to hold their flags up and say the colour names in French one last time.

Educator Tip

To differentiate for advanced learners, ask them to write the French colour names independently rather than using pre-printed labels. If a child struggles with the sequence, provide a completed flag as a visual reference to keep on their desk during the activity.

Assessment

- Observe if the child correctly sequences the blue, white, and red stripes.

- Listen for the child's ability to vocalize the French terms for the colours during the activity.

- Check the child's precision in applying materials within the designated vertical sections of the flag.

Assessment

Assess against Early Learning Goals (ELGs). Document evidence of 'expected' or 'exceeding' descriptors. Note: independent application of skills, ability to explain reasoning, and capacity to build on prior learning. Rubric: reasoning, accuracy, clarity, independence.
