Instructions

Materials

- Rectangular sheets of white cardstock

- Blue and red washable tempera paint

- Small foam sponges or brushes

- Printed cards with the words Bonjour and France

- A globe or world map

- Tape for displaying finished work

Learning Objectives

- Identify the flag of France by its three vertical colours.

- Articulate the French greeting Bonjour with correct pronunciation.

- Demonstrate fine motor control by painting within defined vertical sections.

- Associate the country of France with its location on a map.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Gather the children in a circle and show them the location of France on the globe.

2. Explain that people in France speak French and greet each other by saying Bonjour.

3. Practise saying Bonjour together as a group, starting with a whisper and ending with a loud, clear voice.

4. Distribute the white cardstock and demonstrate how to divide the paper into three equal vertical sections using a pencil.

5. Instruct the children to paint the left section blue and the right section red, leaving the middle section white.

6. Encourage students to hold their brushes vertically to help keep their paint lines straight.

7. While the paint dries, hold up the word cards and ask the children to repeat the French vocabulary.

8. Once the paint is dry, help the children tape their flags to a classroom wall to create a gallery.

9. Invite each child to point to their flag and say Bonjour to a peer.

Educator Tip

If a child struggles with the vertical lines, use masking tape to create physical borders on the paper before they begin painting. This provides a tactile boundary that helps them achieve a clean look and builds confidence in their motor skills.

Assessment

- Observe if the child correctly identifies the blue, white, and red colour sequence.

- Listen for the child attempting the correct pronunciation of the word Bonjour.

- Note if the child can independently locate France on the globe after the lesson.

Assessment

Assess against Early Learning Goals (ELGs). Document evidence of 'expected' or 'exceeding' descriptors. Note: independent application of skills, ability to explain reasoning, and capacity to build on prior learning. Observe explanation quality, cooperation, accuracy.
