French Flag & Language

Level 1 builds foundational geography and cultural awareness. 'French Flag & Language' reinforces identity and belonging.

Objectives

Instructions

Materials

- Rectangular sheets of white cardstock.

- Blue and red washable tempera paint.

- Foam brushes or large sponges.

- Printed images of the French flag for reference.

- Audio recording of simple French greetings like bonjour and merci.

Learning Objectives

- Identify the three vertical stripes of the French flag.

- Practise correct pronunciation of basic French vocabulary.

- Develop fine motor control through painting within defined vertical sections.

- Recognise that different countries have unique symbols and languages.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Gather the children in a circle and show them the image of the French flag. Point to each colour and name it in English and French.

2. Play the audio recording of the greeting bonjour. Ask the children to repeat the word three times together.

3. Distribute the cardstock and explain that they will create their own flag. Use a pencil to lightly mark two vertical lines on each paper to create three sections.

4. Demonstrate how to paint the left section blue and the right section red, leaving the middle section white.

5. Provide the paint and brushes, encouraging children to focus on painting within their marked sections.

6. Circulate the room to assist children with grip and to model the French words again as they work.

7. Once the paint is dry, have each child hold their flag and say bonjour to a partner.

8. Conclude the activity by hanging the flags in the classroom to create a cultural display.

Educator Tip

If a child struggles with the vertical lines, place masking tape on the paper to create physical boundaries for the paint. This provides a tactile edge that helps children stay within their designated colour zones.

Assessment

- Observe if the child can correctly identify the blue and red sections of their flag.

- Listen for the child attempting to mimic the pronunciation of the French greeting.

- Note the child ability to follow multi-step instructions regarding colour placement.

Assessment

Observe and note: ability to follow two-step instructions, use of new vocabulary in context, early problem-solving strategies, and sustained shared thinking episodes. Assess against Development Matters age-band expectations. Checklist: participation, correct identification, completion of task.
