Photosynthesis — How Plants Make Food
Photosynthesis is life's battery. Plants convert sunlight to food; we breathe the byproduct (O2). The experiment is the control — bubbles mean O2. Indirect aim: biochemistry, climate understanding, deep appreciation of plant life.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Cultural Studies
- Learning area: Botany
- Level: Ages 8-10
Objectives
- Understand photosynthesis equation: CO2 + H2O + sunlight → glucose + O2
- Identify chloroplasts under microscope
- Conduct photosynthesis experiments
- Connect to climate and oxygen cycles
Materials
- Elodea or other aquatic plant
- Light source
- Microscope
- Chart of equation
- Beakers
Instructions
1. Equation: 6CO2 + 6H2O + sunlight → C6H12O6 + 6O2. 2. Place aquatic plant (Elodea) under light in water. Observe bubbles — that's oxygen! 3. Cover to block light: bubbles stop. 4. Microscope a leaf: see chloroplasts (green). 5. Without plants, no O2. 6. Connect: plants are climate heroes. 7. Carbon cycle basics. 8. Research deforestation's climate impact.
Educator tip
The bubble experiment is visceral. Children see respiration happening.
Assessment
Observe equation understanding, experiment execution, and climate connection.
