Parts of the Flower

The child's emerging reasoning mind meets the living world with questions: 'What is this part? What does it do?' Botany nomenclature offers precise language, and a real specimen grounds the work in observation. The control card shows which label belongs with which part; the real specimen confirms.

Objectives

Materials

Instructions

1. Bring the puzzle, cards, and real flower to a table. 2. Name the parts on the puzzle one at a time, removing and replacing each piece: petal, sepal, stamen, pistil, stem. 3. Use a three-period lesson for unfamiliar names. 4. Carefully dismantle the real flower with tweezers, laying each part on the tray. 5. Match nomenclature labels to each real part. 6. Verify each match with the control card. 7. Read the definition booklet together, linking function to form. 8. Invite the child to draw the flower and label each part on paper. 9. Store the specimen in a herbarium and return materials.

Educator tip

Pick a species with robust parts. Save specimens in a herbarium to build lasting reference over the year and across species.

Assessment

Observe whether the child names parts in new specimens and generalizes the concept across species.
