Time Line of Life

After the Second Great Lesson, the child's imagination wants to see life's unfolding concretely. The Time Line of Life makes deep time visible as a length of paper the child can walk beside. A misplaced species lands on the wrong era, and the control chart confirms where it belongs.

Objectives

Materials

Instructions

1. Roll out the long timeline on the floor, from earliest to latest. 2. Walk its length with the children. 3. Point to the Precambrian bacteria, the Cambrian explosion, the great reptiles, the mammals, and humans in the final sliver. 4. Name each era and its dominant life forms. 5. Invite children to research an era in depth. 6. Place small cards or drawings on the timeline. 7. Connect to the Stream of Life (fish → amphibian → reptile → mammal). 8. Study fossils linked to each era. 9. Extend with a Time Line of Humans on the same scale.

Educator tip

Allow the child to walk beside the timeline, not just look at it. Scale is the teacher here — the brevity of human history is a shocking discovery.

Assessment

Observe the child's research choices, accuracy of placement, and growing facility with the eras.
