Parts of the Bird
Birds are the most visible vertebrate class for children — they see them daily. Naming the parts of a bird turns casual noticing into careful observation. The nomenclature cards have the usual self-correction: label must match picture.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Cultural Studies
- Learning area: Zoology
- Level: Ages 5-6
Objectives
- Identify parts of a bird: beak, wings, tail, feathers, legs, claws, eye, breast
- Match nomenclature cards to the real bird or puzzle
- Understand birds as one class of vertebrates
- Compare birds to fish and mammals
Materials
- Zoology puzzle of the bird with removable parts
- Three-part nomenclature cards
- Feather samples
- Field guide to local birds
Instructions
1. Bring the puzzle, cards, and feathers to a mat. 2. Remove each puzzle piece and name it. 3. Replace pieces while naming. 4. Match label cards to pictures using the control card. 5. Read the definition booklet. 6. Feel the feather: notice the vane, shaft, barbs. 7. Draw and label a bird from observation or photograph. 8. Watch real birds through a window or on a walk. 9. Compare beak shapes to diets (hooked for tearing, pointed for seeds).
Educator tip
A bird feeder outside the classroom window transforms this into a daily living lesson. Keep a simple log of visitors.
Assessment
Note naming accuracy, accurate labels on drawings, and spontaneous observation of birds in the environment.
