Parts of the Fish
Zoology nomenclature invites the reasoning mind into the animal kingdom. Starting with the fish — the first vertebrates in evolutionary history — gives the child a strong foothold for later classes and prepares the way for the Great Lesson on the Coming of Life. The control card shows the correct match; drawings reveal gaps in naming.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Cultural Studies
- Learning area: Zoology
- Level: Ages 5-6
Objectives
- Identify parts of a fish: fins, gills, scales, operculum, lateral line, tail
- Use three-part nomenclature cards fluently
- Experience the fish as an adapted swimmer
- Prepare for the five classes of vertebrates
Materials
- Zoology puzzle of the fish with removable parts
- Three-part nomenclature cards
- Booklet with definitions of each part
- Optional: model fish or preserved specimen
Instructions
1. Bring the puzzle and nomenclature cards to a mat. 2. Name each puzzle part and remove it with the knob. 3. Return each part while naming. 4. Lay out the picture cards on the left and the label cards in a pile. 5. Invite the child to match a label to each picture. 6. Verify with the control card. 7. Read the definition booklet together, linking function to form (fins for steering, gills for breathing). 8. Sketch and label a fish from observation. 9. Store specimens safely.
Educator tip
Pair nomenclature with living observation where possible. A tank in the classroom turns cards into life and deepens retention.
Assessment
Observe whether the child generalizes parts across fish species and connects form to function.
