Magnetic and Non-Magnetic Sorting
Magnetism provides a fascinating introduction to physical science. Children are captivated by the invisible force and eager to test everything.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Cultural Studies
- Learning area: Science
- Level: Ages 3-5
Objectives
- Explore magnetic properties
- Practice scientific classification
- Make and test predictions
- Develop material awareness
Materials
- Strong bar magnet
- Assorted objects (paper clip, coin, wood block, aluminum foil, nail, rubber band, plastic toy, rock)
- Sorting mat: Magnetic / Not Magnetic
- Recording sheet
Instructions
1. Present magnet. 'This is a magnet—it has a special force.' 2. Touch magnet to paper clip—it sticks! 3. Touch to wood block—nothing happens. 4. Present objects to test. 5. Predict: magnetic or not? 6. Test each object. 7. Sort onto mat. 8. Record results. 9. 'What do magnetic objects have in common?'
Educator tip
Let children test any classroom object they want after the initial lesson. The discovery that not all metals are magnetic (aluminum) is surprising and valuable.
