Seed Dissection and Observation
Dissecting a seed reveals the embryo inside—a tiny plant waiting to grow. This connects to germination experiments and life cycle understanding.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Cultural Studies
- Learning area: Botany
- Level: Ages 4-6
Objectives
- Observe internal seed structure
- Learn parts of a seed
- Understand seeds as potential plants
- Practice scientific observation
Materials
- Lima beans (pre-soaked overnight)
- Magnifying glass
- Tweezers
- Parts of a seed nomenclature cards
- Drawing materials
- Work mat
Instructions
1. Examine dry bean: describe exterior. 2. Examine soaked bean: compare size. 3. Gently split bean along seam with fingernail. 4. Open halves. 5. Use magnifying glass to find embryo (tiny plant). 6. Identify: seed coat, cotyledon (food), embryo. 7. Match to nomenclature cards. 8. Draw and label.
