Water Cycle Demonstration
Demonstrating the water cycle in miniature helps children understand the natural process that creates weather and sustains life.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Cultural Studies
- Learning area: Science
- Level: Ages 4-6
Objectives
- Understand evaporation, condensation, and precipitation
- Observe the water cycle in action
- Build scientific vocabulary
- Connect to real-world weather
Materials
- Large clear bowl
- Plastic wrap
- Small weight (rock)
- Small container inside bowl
- Hot water
- Ice cubes
Instructions
1. Pour warm water into large bowl. 2. Place small empty container in center. 3. Cover with plastic wrap. 4. Place ice cubes on top of plastic wrap. 5. Observe: water evaporates, condenses on plastic (clouds), drips into small container (rain). 6. Label each stage. 7. Draw the water cycle. 8. Connect to real weather observations.
Educator tip
Warm water speeds up the demonstration. The ice creates a temperature difference that encourages condensation. Be patient—it takes about 20 minutes.
Assessment
Child explains the three stages of the water cycle and identifies them in the demonstration.
