Five Little Monkeys
Counting songs embed mathematical concepts in memorable musical contexts. Subtracting one each verse builds intuitive understanding of subtraction before formal operations are introduced. Acting out the rhyme adds kinesthetic learning and increases engagement.
- Framework: IPC
- Unit: At the Zoo
- Learning area: Numeracy
- Level: Levels 1-3
Objectives
- Develop ability to count backwards from five
- Follow the teacher's lead to sing along with counting songs
- Use counters to practise counting and subtracting
Materials
- "Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed" written by Eileen Christelow
- Open space for movement
- Monkey finger puppets or animal counters
Instructions
Read "Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed" by Eileen Christelow with great expression and drama. Encourage children to join in with the repetitive phrases. Build excitement as each monkey falls off the bed and the doctor gets increasingly exasperated.
After reading, stand up together and act out the book as a song and movement activity. Children can jump gently in place as the five little monkeys. Hold up five fingers and count them together. As each verse subtracts one monkey, children can crouch down to show they have fallen off. Count the remaining fingers after each subtraction.
Sing through all the verses, from five monkeys down to one, then none. Finish with the final verse where all the monkeys are put back to bed.
Transition to a partner counting activity. Pair children and distribute monkey counters or small animal manipulatives. One partner says a number between 1 and 20. The other partner counts out that many animals. Then they switch roles. This provides practice with the counting skills developed in previous activities.
Circulate among pairs, observing counting accuracy and peer interaction. Note children who count with ease and those who need additional support.
Educator tip
Create monkey headbands or provide monkey ears for children to wear during the movement activity. This increases investment and makes the experience more memorable.
Assessment
Observe each child's ability to engage fully in singing and moving to the monkey song. Note understanding of subtraction concepts during the countdown. Assess counting accuracy during partner work.
