Animal Shapes

Shape recognition is foundational to geometric understanding. When shapes are connected to engaging content like animal cookie cutters, learning becomes playful and memorable. Matching activities build visual discrimination and vocabulary for describing shape attributes.

Instructions

Before the lesson, prepare laminated pairs of shapes in various colours. Cut matching pairs of circles, squares, rectangles, triangles, diamonds, ovals, and hearts. Each pair should be the same colour and size.

Hide one shape from each pair around the classroom or outdoor area. Keep the matching shapes with you. Explain that children will go on a shape hunt. Distribute three different shapes to each child and guide them to find the matching shape for each one hidden around the space.

Once all matches are found, gather in a circle to discuss the shapes. Ask children to describe their shapes: "How many sides does your triangle have? Does a circle have any corners?" Compare shapes: "How is a square different from a rectangle?"

Transition to the animal shape activity. Display a collection of animal-shaped cookie cutters. Show children how each cookie cutter creates an animal shape. Discuss which geometric shapes they can find within each animal shape: "The elephant's body looks like an oval. Its legs are like rectangles."

Distribute paper with printed animal outlines. Challenge children to identify and colour the geometric shapes they find within each animal. Alternatively, provide play dough and cookie cutters for hands-on shape exploration.

Educator tip

Create a shapes word wall with examples of each shape and vocabulary for describing attributes. Refer to this during the lesson and in future activities.

Assessment

Observe each child's ability to identify and match shapes. Note their capacity to name shape attributes and compare different shapes.
