A Field Trip to the Zoo
Field trips provide irreplaceable experiential learning opportunities. Seeing real animals in carefully designed habitats brings abstract knowledge to life. Practicing appropriate public behaviour develops social skills that transfer to many community settings.
- Framework: IPC
- Unit: At the Zoo
- Learning area: Social Studies
- Level: Levels 1-3
Objectives
- Observe different animals and their habitats during a zoo visit
- Demonstrate proper behaviour skills while visiting the zoo
- Participate successfully in zoo visit activities and follow-up discussions
Materials
- Permission forms and field trip arrangements
- Clipboards and observation sheets (optional)
- Cameras or tablets for documentation
- Request for children to bring a favourite stuffed zoo animal from home after the trip
Instructions
Before the visit, prepare children by discussing zoo expectations. Review safety rules: staying with the group, using quiet voices so animals are not frightened, keeping hands to themselves, and walking rather than running. Practice these expectations through role-play.
During the zoo visit, guide children's observations at each exhibit. Draw attention to each animal's size, colour, habitat features, and diet. Look for feeding time schedules that might enhance the experience. Ask questions that connect to prior learning: "Remember when we read about where lions live? Look at this habitat. Does it remind you of the savanna?"
Encourage children to share what they remember from classroom learning. Celebrate when children recall facts learned previously. Take photographs to document the experience for later reflection and discussion.
After returning to school, conduct a follow-up activity. Ask each child to bring their favourite stuffed zoo animal from home. In a circle, have each child introduce their animal and share one or two facts they learned or remember about that type of animal. Keep the stuffed animals in the classroom for a day or two to create a classroom zoo, extending dramatic play opportunities.
Alternative: If a field trip is not possible, arrange for a travelling zoo or animal educator to visit the school.
Educator tip
Prepare a simple observation sheet with animal pictures for children to check off as they see each one. This gives the visit structure and creates a keepsake. Consider breaking into small groups with parent volunteers to allow for more individualised attention at exhibits.
Assessment
Observe each child's ability to behave appropriately during a school field trip. Note their capacity to name one or two facts about their favourite stuffed zoo animal during the follow-up activity.
