Weight Grading with Cylinders
When visual cues are removed, children must rely entirely on proprioceptive feedback, developing a refined muscular sense.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Sensorial
- Learning area: Stereognostic Sense
- Level: Ages 4-6
Objectives
- Discriminate subtle weight differences
- Develop the muscular sense
- Build systematic comparison skills
- Refine haptic perception
Materials
- Set of identical-looking cylinders with graduated internal weights
- Work mat
- Blindfold
Instructions
1. Present identical-looking cylinders. 2. Pick up two—one in each hand. 3. Bounce gently to compare weight. 4. Determine which is heavier. 5. Grade all cylinders from lightest to heaviest. 6. Verify using reference scale.
Educator tip
Teach the 'bouncing' technique: small upward movements to sense weight. Both hands should move simultaneously.
Assessment
Child grades weight cylinders correctly using muscular sense.
