Thermic Matching Game
Different materials feel warm or cool due to thermal conductivity. This exploration develops scientific thinking through sensory experience.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Sensorial
- Learning area: Tactile Discrimination
- Level: Ages 3-5
Objectives
- Discriminate materials by temperature feel
- Understand thermal conductivity
- Build scientific vocabulary
- Develop systematic comparison
Materials
- Pairs of material tiles: wood, metal, stone, fabric, glass, cork
- Blindfold
- Work mat
Instructions
1. Present material tiles. 2. Touch each with palm. 3. Describe: 'warm' or 'cool.' 4. Find matching pairs by feel. 5. Blindfold: grade from coolest to warmest. 6. Discuss why metal feels cool and wood feels warm.
Educator tip
Metal conducts heat away from hands quickly (feels cool), while wood insulates (feels warm). Children discover physics through touch.
Assessment
Child matches material pairs and describes thermal properties.
