Constructive Triangles: Rectangular Box
Constructive triangles reveal that all geometric figures can be composed of triangles—a fundamental mathematical concept discovered through hands-on exploration.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Sensorial
- Learning area: Visual Discrimination
- Level: Ages 4-6
Objectives
- Discover shapes within shapes
- Understand triangle as fundamental form
- Develop spatial reasoning
- Build geometric construction skills
Materials
- Constructive Triangles: Rectangular Box (pairs of colored triangles)
- Work mat
Instructions
1. Empty box onto mat. 2. Match triangles by color. 3. Join pairs along black lines. 4. Discover resulting shape. 5. Name the shape formed. 6. Record which triangles make which shapes. 7. Try different combinations.
Educator tip
Let children discover the shapes themselves. The 'aha moment' of discovering a square from two triangles is powerful.
Assessment
Child constructs multiple shapes from triangle pairs and names them.
