Thermic Bottles: Temperature Pairing
Thermic bottles isolate the temperature sense, teaching children to perceive and describe subtle thermal differences.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Sensorial
- Learning area: Tactile Discrimination
- Level: Ages 4-6
Objectives
- Discriminate temperature differences
- Develop thermic vocabulary
- Practice careful sensory comparison
- Isolate the thermic sense
Materials
- Pairs of metal bottles filled with water at different temperatures (cold, cool, warm, hot)
- Blindfold
- Tray with insulating mat
Instructions
1. Prepare bottles at four temperatures. 2. Feel one bottle with both hands. 3. Feel another—compare: warmer or cooler? 4. Find matching temperature pairs. 5. Grade from coldest to hottest. 6. Blindfold: repeat pairing and grading. 7. Introduce vocabulary: cold, cool, tepid, warm, hot.
Educator tip
Metal bottles conduct temperature best. Prepare just before use—temperatures equalize over time. Use safely warm, never dangerously hot water.
Assessment
Child pairs and grades thermic bottles correctly while blindfolded.
