Multiplication Chart 1 — The Filled Table
Chart 1 gives all facts at once. The child scans for patterns: doubles, squares, columns of 5 ending in 0 or 5. Indirect aim: pattern recognition as core mathematical thinking, memorization as consequence of seeing.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Sensorial
- Learning area: Algebraic Sensorial
- Level: Ages 7-8
Objectives
- Study the fully-filled multiplication table 1×1 through 10×10
- Identify row and column patterns
- Find commutative pairs
- Memorize by pattern not rote
Materials
- Multiplication Chart 1 (filled grid)
- Problem cards
- Pointer for scanning
- Recording paper
Instructions
1. Lay out Chart 1. 2. Scan the 1-row: 1,2,3... the 2-row: 2,4,6... 3. Identify the diagonal: 1,4,9...100 — squares. 4. Notice ×5 column always ends in 0 or 5. 5. Find commutative pairs. 6. Compute given facts using the chart. 7. Solve problem cards. 8. Memorize facts by family.
Educator tip
Let children discover patterns. When a child says 'all the ×9 facts sum to 9!' honor it.
Assessment
Observe pattern discovery and ability to use chart for computation.
