Rough and Smooth Boards: Gradation
The rough and smooth boards systematically refine the tactile sense and prepare the fingertips for the delicate touch needed for sandpaper letters.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Sensorial
- Learning area: Tactile Discrimination
- Level: Ages 3-4
Objectives
- Discriminate textures from rough to smooth
- Develop vocabulary for texture
- Refine fingertip sensitivity
- Prepare for sandpaper letters
Materials
- Rough and smooth boards (paired: one rough, one smooth)
- Graded sandpaper boards (5 grades rough to smooth)
- Blindfold
Instructions
1. Wash and dry hands (enhances sensitivity). 2. Present board 1: alternating rough/smooth strips. 3. Touch with fingertips, light pressure. 4. Feel the difference: 'rough... smooth... rough...' 5. Present graded boards. 6. Grade from roughest to smoothest. 7. Blindfold: repeat grading by touch. 8. Introduce vocabulary: coarse, fine, smooth.
Educator tip
Always wash hands first—clean, slightly damp fingers are most sensitive. Light pressure with fingertips, not whole hand.
Assessment
Child grades all sandpaper boards from roughest to smoothest while blindfolded.
