Geometric Solids
The geometric solids introduce children to three-dimensional forms they will encounter in geometry. Tactile exploration builds deep understanding of spatial relationships.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Sensorial
- Learning area: Stereognostic Sense
- Level: Ages 3-6
Objectives
- Explore three-dimensional geometric forms
- Develop spatial awareness
- Build geometry vocabulary
- Prepare for mathematical geometry
Materials
- Geometric Solids: sphere, cube, cylinder, cone, rectangular prism, triangular prism, pyramid, ovoid, ellipsoid
- Wooden bases for matching
- Blindfold
Instructions
1. Present solids, explore visually and tactilely. 2. Roll or stack to discover properties. 3. Match solids to wooden bases. 4. Learn names through three-period lesson. 5. Identify solids while blindfolded. 6. Find shapes in environment.
Educator tip
Introduce solids in groups: those that roll (sphere, ovoid, ellipsoid), those with flat surfaces (cube, prisms), those with points (cone, pyramid).
Assessment
Child names geometric solids, matches to bases, and identifies by touch alone.
