Knobbed Cylinders
The knobbed cylinders provide visual discrimination of size while developing the precise pincer grip needed for writing. Each block isolates a different dimensional quality.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Sensorial
- Learning area: Visual Discrimination
- Level: Ages 3-5
Objectives
- Discriminate between dimensions
- Develop visual perception of graduated sizes
- Refine pincer grip for writing
- Build problem-solving through trial and error
Materials
- Four blocks containing 10 knobbed cylinders each
- Block 1: Vary in diameter and height (proportional)
- Block 2: Vary in diameter only
- Block 3: Vary in height only
- Block 4: Vary inversely (diameter increases as height decreases)
Instructions
1. Place block on table. 2. Remove cylinders one at a time using three-finger grip on knob. 3. Mix cylinders on table. 4. Replace cylinders, matching each to its socket. 5. Self-check: cylinder should sit flush with block surface. 6. Progress to combining multiple blocks.
Educator tip
The three-finger grip on the knob is identical to pencil grip—this is direct writing preparation.
Assessment
Child correctly replaces all cylinders with accurate pincer grip and self-corrects errors.
