Constructive Triangles: Triangular Box
The constructive triangles reveal that all plane geometric figures can be constructed from triangles—a fundamental geometric principle.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Sensorial
- Learning area: Visual Discrimination
- Level: Ages 4-6
Objectives
- Discover that triangles form other shapes
- Develop spatial reasoning
- Build geometric understanding
- Practice visual analysis
Materials
- Triangular box of constructive triangles
- Work mat
- Control chart
Instructions
1. Open triangular box. 2. Remove all triangles. 3. Note the black lines on some edges. 4. Match black lines together. 5. Observe shapes formed: what shapes appear? 6. Discover the grey triangle formed from smaller triangles. 7. Compare with control chart. 8. Experiment with different combinations.
Educator tip
The black lines guide initial discovery. Later, children can work without the lines, using visual judgment alone.
Assessment
Child constructs all shapes from the triangular box and names the resulting forms.
