Baric Tablets: Weight Discrimination
Baric tablets isolate the sense of weight. By removing visual cues, children refine their ability to discriminate subtle weight differences.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Sensorial
- Learning area: Tactile Discrimination
- Level: Ages 4-6
Objectives
- Refine sense of weight differences
- Develop comparative language
- Build concentration through subtle discrimination
- Isolate the baric sense
Materials
- Three sets of baric tablets (light, medium, heavy wood)
- Blindfold
- Work mat
Instructions
1. Present three tablets of obviously different weights. 2. Place one on each palm. 3. Compare: 'Which feels heavier?' 4. Grade from lightest to heaviest. 5. Add blindfold and repeat. 6. Mix all tablets. 7. Sort into three groups by weight. 8. Check by comparing within groups.
Educator tip
Movements should be slow and deliberate—bouncing the hand slightly helps sense weight. Always use a blindfold for the full experience.
Assessment
Child sorts baric tablets into correct groups while blindfolded.
