Tying a Bow
Tying a bow is a complex bilateral skill that requires persistence and coordination, representing a significant milestone in self-care independence.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Practical Life
- Learning area: Care of Self
- Level: Ages 4-6
Objectives
- Master bow-tying technique
- Develop bilateral coordination
- Build persistence with complex tasks
Materials
- Bow-tying frame or practice ribbon on a board
- Colored ribbons (two colors)
Instructions
1. Cross right ribbon over left. 2. Tuck right ribbon under and pull tight. 3. Make a loop with the right ribbon (bunny ear). 4. Wrap left ribbon around the loop. 5. Push left ribbon through the hole to make second loop. 6. Pull both loops to tighten. 7. Adjust for even bow.
Educator tip
Use two different colored ribbons so children can track each side. The 'bunny ears' method works well: make two loops and tie them.
Assessment
Child ties a bow independently that holds securely.
