Dusting Shelves
Dusting teaches systematic left-to-right, top-to-bottom work patterns that transfer to reading and writing, while building environmental care.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Practical Life
- Learning area: Care of Environment
- Level: Ages 3-5
Objectives
- Learn to clean shelves systematically
- Develop responsibility for shared spaces
- Practice left-to-right movement
Materials
- Soft dusting cloth
- Spray bottle with water (light mist)
- Shelf with removable items
Instructions
1. Remove items from the shelf carefully. 2. Place them on a nearby mat. 3. Lightly mist the cloth (not the shelf). 4. Wipe the shelf from left to right. 5. Wipe from top shelf to bottom. 6. Replace items in their correct positions. 7. Check your work—does it look clean?
Educator tip
The left-to-right wiping motion reinforces the reading direction. Show children how to notice dust—hold cloth up to the light.
