Putting On and Removing Socks
Putting on socks requires bilateral coordination and body awareness, building the independence children need for self-dressing.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Practical Life
- Learning area: Care of Self
- Level: Ages 3-4
Objectives
- Develop dressing independence
- Practice fine motor manipulation
- Build body awareness
Materials
- Child's socks (slightly loose for practice)
- Chair to sit on
Instructions
1. Sit in a chair. 2. Pick up one sock. 3. Hold the opening wide with both hands. 4. Point toes and slide foot in. 5. Pull sock over heel. 6. Pull up to ankle or calf. 7. Adjust toe seam. 8. Repeat with other foot.
Educator tip
The heel is the tricky part. Show how to 'cup' the heel section and slide it on. Slightly larger socks are easier to start with.
Assessment
Child puts on and removes socks independently with correct orientation.
