Transferring with a Spoon: Small Objects
Transferring small objects with a spoon challenges balance and steadiness, building the hand control needed for writing and eating.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Practical Life
- Learning area: Preliminary Exercises
- Level: Ages 3-4
Objectives
- Refine spoon control
- Develop hand stability
- Build concentration
Materials
- Two small bowls
- Tablespoon
- Small objects (marbles, beads, or beans)
- Tray
Instructions
1. Place bowl of objects on left, empty bowl on right. 2. Hold spoon in dominant hand like a pencil. 3. Scoop one object onto the spoon. 4. Carefully move spoon over to right bowl. 5. Tilt to release object. 6. Continue until all objects are transferred. 7. Count objects to verify none were lost.
Educator tip
Progress from large to small objects. Round objects (marbles) add difficulty because they roll off the spoon.
Assessment
Child transfers all objects without dropping any.
