Sewing a Felt Pouch by Hand

Handwork grounds the elementary child's abstract mind in a made object. The stitches are the control — a crooked whipstitch is immediately visible. Indirect aim: precision, patience, the deep satisfaction of a finished, useful thing.

Instructions

1. Choose felt and thread; measure and mark a 15x20cm rectangle and a flap. 2. Cut with small scissors along the chalk line. 3. Fold and pin the body of the pouch, leaving the flap loose. 4. Thread the needle, knot the end, begin a running stitch along one side. 5. Continue around the pouch; finish with a knot on the inside. 6. Sew a whipstitch decorative border along the flap edge. 7. Attach a button; cut a small slit on the flap as a buttonhole. 8. Use the pouch for coins, beads, or Going Out receipts.

Educator tip

The first pouch is slow and imperfect. Display it anyway. By the third pouch the child has a gift-quality object and a new skill to teach a younger peer.

Assessment

Observe measurement precision, stitch evenness, and finish quality. The object itself is the assessment; frame it gently without grading.
