Planning and Preparing a Three-Course Meal

Cooking is practical life at its most grown-up: plan, source, execute, serve, clean. The timing chart is the control — a main course five minutes late is a real event, not an abstraction. Indirect aim: planning under time pressure, hospitality, the dignity of nourishing others.

Objectives

Materials

Instructions

1. A team of three children chooses a serve date and guest list. 2. They draft the menu from the seasonal produce card. 3. Backwards-plan: if serve is 12:30, what must be started at 12:00, 11:30, 11:00? 4. Shop the list with a guide adult; stay to budget. 5. Prep the day of: one child per course; the timing chart is visible. 6. Serve at the agreed time; the team eats with the guests. 7. Reconcile receipts after the meal. 8. Clean the kitchen before leaving — tomorrow's team arrives to a clean space.

Educator tip

The first meal runs late. Say so in advance — lateness is the lesson, not the failure. By the third meal the team runs early.

Assessment

Observe menu balance, budget discipline, kitchen collaboration, serve timing, and the state of the kitchen on handover. The chart, used honestly, is the honest record.
