Subtraction with Golden Beads: Static
Static subtraction with golden beads makes the 'taking away' concept visible and concrete before children encounter abstract subtraction.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Mathematics
- Learning area: Operations
- Level: Ages 4-6
Objectives
- Understand subtraction as taking away
- Practice static subtraction (no exchanging)
- Record subtraction equations
- Use concrete materials for abstract operations
Materials
- Golden bead material (units, tens, hundreds)
- Large number cards
- Tray
- Work mat
- Paper and pencil
Instructions
1. Build starting number with beads and cards (e.g., 5,843). 2. 'We need to take away 2,321.' 3. Remove units: take 1 unit away. 4. Remove tens: take 2 ten-bars away. 5. Remove hundreds: take 3 hundred-squares. 6. Remove thousands: take 2 thousand-cubes. 7. Count remaining beads. 8. Record equation.
Educator tip
Start with static problems (no exchanging needed). Dynamic subtraction with exchanging comes later. Always verify by counting remaining beads.
Assessment
Child performs static subtraction with golden beads and records equations accurately.
