Pattern Block Designs
Pattern blocks reveal fractional relationships (two trapezoids = one hexagon) through open-ended exploration, building intuitive fraction sense.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Mathematics
- Learning area: Fractions
- Level: Ages 3-5
Objectives
- Explore geometric relationships
- Develop spatial reasoning
- Discover fractional relationships
- Build creative problem-solving
Materials
- Pattern blocks (hexagons, trapezoids, triangles, rhombuses)
- Design cards
- Plain paper for tracing
- Work mat
Instructions
1. Explore blocks freely. 2. Present design card. 3. Build design using blocks. 4. Discover: which blocks fit inside the hexagon? 5. Two trapezoids = one hexagon (halves). 6. Three rhombuses = one hexagon (thirds). 7. Six triangles = one hexagon (sixths).
Educator tip
Let children discover relationships before naming fractions. 'How many triangles fill the hexagon?' leads to sixths naturally.
Assessment
Child completes designs and identifies fractional relationships between blocks.
