Geometric Shape Exploration: Sides and Corners
Exploring properties (sides, corners) moves children from visual shape recognition to analytical geometry—understanding why shapes are classified.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Mathematics
- Learning area: Fractions
- Level: Ages 3-5
Objectives
- Identify properties of 2D shapes
- Count sides and corners
- Build geometric vocabulary
- Prepare for measurement
Materials
- Geometric cabinet insets
- Paper shapes
- Toothpicks and clay for building
- Shape property chart
Instructions
1. Trace geometric inset. 2. Count sides of shape. 3. Count corners (vertices). 4. Record on chart. 5. Compare shapes: 'What has more sides?' 6. Build shapes with toothpicks and clay balls. 7. Sort by number of sides.
Educator tip
Building with toothpicks and clay makes properties tangible. Children discover that three toothpicks make a triangle, four make a square.
Assessment
Child counts sides and corners and classifies shapes by properties.
