Place Value with Numeral Cards
Numeral cards show place value physically: the 3 in 300 is larger than the 3 in 3 because the card is larger. Overlapping cards reveal number composition.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Mathematics
- Learning area: Decimal System
- Level: Ages 4-6
Objectives
- Understand hierarchical place value
- Build and read multi-digit numbers
- Decompose numbers by place
- Prepare for written operations
Materials
- Large numeral cards (units: green, tens: blue, hundreds: red, thousands: green)
- Golden bead materials for verification
- Work mat
Instructions
1. Present unit cards 1-9 (green). 2. Present ten cards 10-90 (blue). 3. Present hundred cards 100-900 (red). 4. Build number: 'Show me 364.' 5. Overlay: 300 + 60 + 4 = 364. 6. Verify with golden beads. 7. Read numbers others have built.
Educator tip
The overlapping makes the zero visible: 305 shows the zero in the tens place. This prevents common place value errors.
