Number Rods: Stair Building
Building the Number Rod stair combines sensorial ordering with mathematical meaning, reinforcing that each subsequent number is 'one more.'
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Mathematics
- Learning area: Numeracy Introduction
- Level: Ages 3-4
Objectives
- Order quantities from smallest to largest
- Develop visual discrimination of length
- Build seriation skills
Materials
- Number Rods 1-10
- Large work mat
Instructions
1. Carry rods to mat one at a time. 2. Find the longest rod, place at top. 3. Find the next longest, align left edges. 4. Continue until stair is complete. 5. Count segments of each rod. 6. Touch and name: 'One more than five is six.'
Educator tip
Align left edges to make the 'stair' pattern visible. This shows each number is one unit more than the previous.
Assessment
Child builds stair independently and identifies the 'one more' pattern.
