Number Rods and Counters
Transitioning from fixed quantities (rods) to loose quantities (counters) deepens understanding that numbers represent 'how many' regardless of arrangement.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Mathematics
- Learning area: Counting & Quantity
- Level: Ages 3-5
Objectives
- Count loose objects to match rod quantities
- Reinforce one-to-one correspondence
- Bridge fixed and loose quantity representations
Materials
- Number Rods 1-10
- 55 small counters (buttons, gems)
- Work mat
Instructions
1. Place rod 3 on mat. 2. Count 3 counters beside it. 3. Verify: 'Three segments, three counters.' 4. Continue with other rods. 5. Mix: present counters, child finds matching rod. 6. Play 'build and verify' independently.
Educator tip
The rod provides the control of error—children can self-check by comparing counter groups to rod segments.
Assessment
Child matches correct counter quantities to each rod.
