Retelling Stories with Props
Retelling with props gives children physical anchors for narrative structure, making abstract story elements concrete and manipulable.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Language
- Learning area: Spoken Language
- Level: Ages 3-5
Objectives
- Retell stories maintaining sequence
- Use story language (once upon a time, the end)
- Develop comprehension through retelling
- Build oral fluency
Materials
- Felt board with story characters
- Story stones or puppets
- Familiar picture books
- Flannel board pieces
Instructions
1. Read a familiar story aloud. 2. Present felt/prop characters. 3. 'Now you tell the story.' 4. Child places characters as they retell. 5. Prompt with: 'What happened next?' 6. Encourage story language. 7. Peers add to collaborative retelling.
Educator tip
Start with simple 3-event stories. Accept approximations—the structure matters more than exact words.
Assessment
Child retells a story with beginning, middle, end using props to support narrative.
