Sound Sorting Baskets
Sorting by initial sound builds the auditory discrimination needed for reading while making the abstract concept of 'beginning sound' concrete and manipulable.
- Framework: Montessori
- Unit: Language
- Learning area: Phonemic Awareness
- Level: Ages 3-4
Objectives
- Sort objects by beginning sound
- Discriminate between two contrasting sounds
- Build phonemic categorization
- Prepare for letter-sound work
Materials
- Two baskets labeled with letters (e.g., M and S)
- Small objects starting with each sound (mouse, marble, mitten / sun, sock, spoon)
- Sorting mat
Instructions
1. Place two labeled baskets. 2. Present objects one at a time. 3. 'Mouse. /m/ /m/ mouse. Does it start with /m/ or /s/?' 4. Child places in correct basket. 5. Say all objects in each basket when done. 6. Switch to new sound pairs. 7. Increase to three baskets for advanced learners.
Educator tip
Start with very different sounds (m vs s) before moving to similar sounds (b vs p). Use real objects when possible.
Assessment
