Garden of Colours

Materials

Instructions

Begin by reading A Rainbow of Flowers by Lois Ehlert, pausing to discuss the illustrations and draw attention to the variety of flower colours represented. After reading, invite children to name flowers they know and discuss what colours those flowers might be. Record responses on the board, noting that some flowers like roses can be red, pink, white, or yellow.

Explain that together the class will create a paper flower garden. Each child will choose a real flower to replicate, selecting an appropriate colour based on discussion. Display reference pictures of various flowers for inspiration.

Guide children through the flower-making process: selecting coloured construction paper, drawing or tracing a flower shape, cutting it out carefully, and adding details with crayons or markers. As children work, circulate and discuss each flower's colour and type.

Mount pre-cut green stems on a display board. Have each child attach their completed flower to create a class garden. Conclude by discussing what plants need to grow: soil for nutrients, water, sunlight, and warmth. Write these necessities beside the class garden display.

Assessment

Observe each child's ability to discuss different flower colours, create their own paper flower, and list what plants need to grow.
