Flower Word Book

Materials

Instructions

Begin by reading Flower Garden by Eve Bunting, pausing to discuss the story and garden-themed vocabulary. After reading, display illustrations of common flowers with their names printed clearly: rose, daisy, tulip, sunflower, lily. Point to letters as you name each flower.

Distribute handwriting paper and demonstrate a special three-fold technique that creates three equal sections. Guide children to replicate the fold, then carefully cut along the fold lines to create three strips.

On each strip, children will select one flower word from the display and copy it carefully. Circulate to support letter formation and proper spelling. Once words are written, distribute cardstock pages. Children glue one word strip per page and use crayons or colouring pencils to draw their interpretation of that flower.

Create a cover page with the title "My Flower Word Book" and the child's name. Stack pages, punch holes along one edge, and bind with ribbon. Conclude by having children share their books, reading their flower words and showing their drawings.

Assessment

Observe each child's ability to listen to and comprehend the story, follow multi-step directions, and complete their Flower Word Book.
