The Four Seasons Poster
Level 1 builds foundational seasonal science.
- Framework: EYFS
- Unit: EYFS Summer Time
- Learning area: Understanding the World
- Level: EYFS 3-4
Objectives
- Identify and name four seasons
- create poster with seasonal images.
Instructions
Materials
- One large piece of poster board divided into four equal quadrants.
- Pre-cut seasonal items such as cotton balls, silk leaves, paper flowers, and sun cutouts.
- Non-toxic liquid glue in small bowls with brushes.
- Crayons and markers for labelling.
- Printed images representing weather patterns for each season.
Learning Objectives
- Identify the four distinct seasons by name.
- Match seasonal items to the correct quadrant on the poster.
- Demonstrate fine motor control while applying glue and placing small objects.
- Participate in a group discussion about seasonal clothing and weather.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Gather the children in a circle and introduce the concept of a year as a cycle of four seasons.
2. Display the divided poster board and label each section as spring, summer, autumn, or winter.
3. Show the children the collection of seasonal items and ask them to describe what they see.
4. Invite one child at a time to select an item and identify which season it belongs to.
5. Guide the children to brush a small amount of glue onto the corresponding quadrant of the poster.
6. Assist the children in pressing their items firmly onto the poster board.
7. Encourage children to use crayons to draw simple weather symbols like rain clouds or snow in the appropriate sections.
8. Review the completed poster together as a group to reinforce the sequence of the seasons.
9. Hang the poster at the eye level of the children to allow for continued observation and discussion throughout the week.
Educator Tip
If children struggle to distinguish between seasons, focus on sensory cues like temperature or clothing. Use real-world examples by asking what they wear when it is cold versus when it is hot to help them connect the abstract concept of a season to their daily lives.
Assessment
- Observe if the child correctly places items in the designated seasonal quadrants.
- Note the ability of the child to name at least two of the four seasons during the activity.
- Record the level of independence the child shows when using the glue and placing materials.
Assessment
Observe and note: ability to follow two-step instructions, use of new vocabulary in context, early problem-solving strategies, and sustained shared thinking episodes. Assess against Development Matters age-band expectations. Checklist: season naming, image placement.
