The Four Seasons Poster

Level 3 promotes scientific inquiry.

Objectives

Instructions

Materials

- Large poster board divided into four equal quadrants

- Assorted craft materials including cotton balls, dried leaves, tissue paper, and flower cutouts

- Glue sticks and child-safe scissors

- Markers and coloured pencils

- Printed labels for each season

Learning Objectives

- Identify and name the four distinct seasons of the year.

- Categorize seasonal items based on environmental characteristics.

- Demonstrate fine motor control by cutting and pasting materials.

- Explain the relationship between seasonal changes and weather patterns.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Gather the children in a circle and facilitate a brief discussion about the current season and how it differs from the others.

2. Present the large poster board and label each quadrant with the names of the four seasons.

3. Distribute the craft materials and explain that each item represents a specific season, such as cotton for winter snow or leaves for autumn.

4. Instruct the children to work in pairs to select materials that correspond to the weather and nature patterns of each season.

5. Model how to use scissors to trim materials to fit into the designated quadrants.

6. Encourage students to glue their items onto the poster while discussing their choices with their partners.

7. Ask students to draw additional details, such as suns, rain clouds, or snowmen, to complete their seasonal scenes.

8. Review the finished poster as a group and ask each child to point to one item and explain why it belongs in that specific season.

Educator Tip

To support varying skill levels, provide pre-cut shapes for students who struggle with scissor control. If a child finishes early, encourage them to write a short sentence describing their favourite season to build literacy skills.

Assessment

- Observe if the child correctly places items in the appropriate seasonal quadrant.

- Listen for the child using descriptive language to explain why certain items represent specific seasons.

- Note the child's ability to collaborate and share materials with their partner during the task.

Assessment

Assess against Early Learning Goals (ELGs). Document evidence of 'expected' or 'exceeding' descriptors. Note: independent application of skills, ability to explain reasoning, and capacity to build on prior learning. Rubric: accuracy, reasoning, independence.
