Level 2 deepens seasonal understanding.
- Framework: EYFS
- Unit: EYFS Summer Time
- Learning area: Understanding the World
- Level: EYFS Reception
Objectives
- Compare seasons
- explain weather and clothing changes.
Instructions
Materials
- Large poster board divided into four equal quadrants
- Pre-cut seasonal icons such as snowflakes, flowers, suns, and falling leaves
- Glue sticks and child-safe scissors
- Cotton balls, green sugar paper, and yellow tissue paper
- Markers or crayons for labelling
Learning Objectives
- Identify the unique characteristics of each of the four seasons.
- Demonstrate fine motor control by cutting and pasting items into the correct quadrants.
- Categorize seasonal items based on visual cues and class discussion.
- Communicate observations about weather changes during the year.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Gather the children in a circle and display the blank four-quadrant poster.
2. Lead a brief discussion about the current season, Summer, and ask students to describe what they see outside.
3. Introduce the other three seasons one by one, asking students to name one item associated with each.
4. Distribute the pre-cut icons and craft materials to each student at their tables.
5. Instruct students to label each quadrant with the name of the season using markers.
6. Guide students to glue the appropriate items into each section, such as cotton balls for Winter snow or yellow tissue paper for the Summer sun.
7. Encourage students to draw additional details, such as trees or clothing, to complete their seasonal scenes.
8. Circulate around the room to ask individual students why they placed specific items in certain quadrants.
9. Display the completed posters at the children's eye level to reinforce the sequence of the seasons.
Educator Tip
To support students who struggle with categorization, provide a reference chart with images showing the same tree changing throughout the year. This visual anchor helps children connect abstract seasonal concepts to concrete environmental changes.
Assessment
- Observe if the student correctly places seasonal items in the corresponding quadrants.
- Listen for the student to correctly name at least three out of the four seasons during the activity.
- Note the student's ability to explain their choices when asked why a specific item belongs in a certain season.
Assessment
Assess against Early Learning Goals (ELGs). Document evidence of 'expected' or 'exceeding' descriptors. Note: independent application of skills, ability to explain reasoning, and capacity to build on prior learning. Observe reasoning, comparison skills.
