Beautiful Butterfly (Symmetry Art)

Infants learn through sensory exploration and repetition.

Objectives

Instructions

Materials

- Heavy cardstock paper cut into large butterfly shapes.

- Non-toxic, washable tempera paint in bright primary colours.

- Clear plastic zip-top bags.

- Masking tape.

- A picture book featuring high-contrast images of butterflies.

- Soft floor mats for tummy time.

Learning Objectives

- Infants will track the movement of the teacher's hands during the painting process.

- Infants will experience tactile stimulation through the plastic barrier.

- Infants will demonstrate curiosity by reaching toward the colorful shapes.

- Infants will engage in sensory exploration of different textures.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Place infants on a clean, soft floor mat to ensure comfort and safety.

2. Read a short, high-contrast butterfly book aloud, pointing to the wings to build early vocabulary.

3. Place a few small dollops of paint onto one side of the butterfly-shaped cardstock.

4. Carefully slide the cardstock into the plastic bag and seal it tightly.

5. Secure the bag to the floor or a low table using masking tape so it does not slide.

6. Encourage the infant to touch, pat, or press the bag with their hands.

7. Demonstrate how pressing the bag spreads the paint across the paper to create a symmetrical pattern.

8. Allow the infant to explore the squishy texture and observe the colours mixing under the plastic.

9. Carefully remove the paper from the bag once the infant loses interest or the paint is spread.

10. Set the artwork aside to dry in a safe area out of reach of the children.

Educator Tip

Infants often explore objects by mouthing them, so keeping the paint sealed inside the plastic bag is essential for safety. If an infant is hesitant to touch the bag, place your hand over theirs to provide gentle guidance and show them that the movement creates a change in the colours.

Assessment

- Observe if the infant uses their hands or fingers to interact with the surface of the bag.

- Note if the infant visually tracks the shifting colours as the paint moves.

- Record the infant's level of engagement and duration of interest in the sensory activity.

Assessment

Observe and note: sustained engagement, sensory responses, early vocalisations, and attachment behaviours. Document using the Characteristics of Effective Learning framework (Playing and Exploring). Observe visual tracking and sensory engagement.
