Instructions
Pin the Body Part: Body Sketch + Song
Materials
Large paper or butcher paper
Markers or crayons
Child safe scissors
Glue sticks
Pictures of different body parts (e.g., eyes, nose, mouth, ears, hands, feet) – enough for each child to have a few
A printed outline of a simple person or a large drawing of a body outline on the paper
"Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes" song lyrics (optional)
Learning Objectives
Children will be able to identify and name at least three different body parts.
Children will be able to physically locate and touch the body parts they are discussing.
Children will participate in a group song about body parts, using gestures.
Children will practise fine motor skills through cutting and gluing.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Gather the children in a circle with the large paper displaying the body outline. Explain that we are going to create a body together, like building our own family member!
2. Sing "Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes" together, encouraging children to touch the corresponding body parts on themselves. "Where are your shoulders, just like mine? Show me!"
3. Introduce the pictures of body parts. Ask children to identify what each picture is. "What do we use this for? Who has eyes in their family?"
4. Have each child choose a body part picture. If possible, have them tell you who in their family might have that feature.
5. Guide children to carefully cut out their chosen body part pictures. For those needing help, you can pre-cut.
6. Invite children to come up one by one and glue their body part onto the large body outline. As they place it, ask them to say the name of the body part.
7. Continue until the body outline is complete. You can add extra details like hair or clothes if time allows, perhaps asking children what colour hair someone in their family has.
8. Admire the completed body drawing together. "Look! We made our own special person, just like the people in our families!"
Educator Tip
This activity is great for reinforcing family connections. Encourage children to think about the body parts of their family members as they choose their pictures. For children who are less verbal, focus on their gestures and participation in the song. Ensure scissors are age-appropriate and supervise closely during the cutting phase.
Assessment
Observe which children can identify and name body parts accurately. Note their ability to locate and touch the body parts when singing the song. Document their participation in the cutting and gluing process, and listen for their verbal contributions as they place their body parts on the large drawing.
Educator tip
Use rubric; insist on justification.
Assessment
Assess against Early Learning Goals (ELGs). Document evidence of 'expected' or 'exceeding' descriptors. Note: independent application of skills, ability to explain reasoning, and capacity to build on prior learning. Rubric (1–4): accuracy, labelling, description quality.
