Learning Objectives

Children will be able to identify and name different musical instruments.

Children will demonstrate an understanding of rhythm by clapping, tapping, or moving to the beat.

Children will express themselves creatively through dance and movement inspired by family themes.

Children will participate cooperatively in group music and movement activities.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Gather the children in a circle and introduce the theme: "Today, we're going to celebrate our families with music and dancing!" Show pictures of different families.

2. Introduce some of the instruments. Let children explore them briefly. Ask, "What does this sound like when you play it? Does it remind you of anything in your home?"

3. Play a simple song with a clear beat. Encourage children to clap or tap along. "Can you feel the steady beat of the music? Let's clap it like a happy heart for our families!"

4. Introduce a movement activity. "Let's move to the music like we move with our families. We can swing our arms like hugging someone, or stomp our feet like everyone marching together!"

5. Play a variety of upbeat songs. Encourage free expression through dance. "Show me how you dance with your family at a party or a celebration!"

6. Integrate instruments. Distribute instruments and invite children to play along with the music. "Let's make music like a family band! What instrument will you play to represent your family's happy sound?"

7. Use chart paper to draw or write down the names of favourite songs or instruments the children enjoyed. "What songs made you think of your family? What sounds did we make together today?"

8. Conclude with a calm song and gentle movements, perhaps pretending to rock a baby or sway like trees in a park where families might visit.

Educator Tip

Ensure all instruments are clean and safe for young children. When selecting music, choose songs that are joyful and have lyrics that can connect to family love and togetherness. Encourage shy children by offering them a turn to hold an instrument or by gently inviting them to join the movement with a simple hand motion.

Assessment

Observe children's participation and engagement in the music and movement activities. Note their ability to follow the beat, their willingness to explore instruments, and their creative expression through dance. Look for instances where they connect the music or movements to their family experiences. Document any spontaneous songs or dances they create.

Educator tip

Use rubric; insist on justification of musical choices.

Assessment

Assess against Early Learning Goals (ELGs). Document evidence of 'expected' or 'exceeding' descriptors. Note: independent application of skills, ability to explain reasoning, and capacity to build on prior learning. Rubric (1–4): creativity, rhythm, expression, collaboration.
