A variety of familiar children's songs with simple melodies (e.g., "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star," "Wheels on the Bus," "If You're Happy and You Know It")
Pictures of different families
A collection of soft scarves or ribbons
Parent or caregiver present (if possible)
Comfortable seating for adults
Learning Objectives
Infants will respond to music by moving their bodies, heads, and limbs.
Infants will explore cause and effect by shaking or banging instruments.
Infants will show enjoyment and engagement with familiar songs and movement activities.
Infants will demonstrate early social interaction by looking at and reaching for caregivers and peers.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Begin by laying out the soft blanket or mat on the floor. Invite the infants and their caregivers (if present) to gather on the mat, creating a comfortable space that feels like their own cozy home.
2. Introduce the first song, perhaps "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star." Sing it in a gentle, soothing voice, making eye contact with each infant. Gently sway them in your arms or bounce them softly to the rhythm, mimicking how a parent might soothe a baby.
3. Bring out the musical instruments. Show the infants how to shake a maraca or tap a soft drum. Offer an instrument to an infant who shows interest, guiding their hand if needed. Celebrate each attempt to make a sound as if discovering a new toy at home.
4. Play a lively song like "Wheels on the Bus." Encourage caregivers to gently move the infants' arms and legs in time with the music, imagining they are going on a family outing.
5. Distribute the soft scarves or ribbons. Encourage caregivers to wave them gently above the infants, letting them watch the colours and movement, like watching a mobile over their crib at home.
6. Integrate pictures of families into the movement. Hold up a picture of a family and sing a song about family, then encourage gentle bouncing or swaying, connecting the idea of family with the actions.
7. Pause between songs to offer opportunities for infants to explore the instruments independently or interact with their caregivers.
8. Conclude the session by singing a lullaby and gently rocking the infants, bringing the musical exploration to a peaceful close, much like ending a day at home.
Educator Tip
Safety is paramount. Ensure all instruments are large enough not to be a choking hazard and have no small, detachable parts. Prioritize a calm and unhurried atmosphere, allowing each infant to engage at their own pace. If parents or caregivers are present, encourage them to participate fully, as their involvement reinforces the feeling of home and family connection during the activity.
Assessment
Observe infants' reactions to the music and instruments. Note their body movements, vocalizations, and facial expressions, looking for signs of engagement and enjoyment. Also, observe their interactions with caregivers and any attempts to grasp or manipulate the instruments, noting their exploration and discovery.
Educator tip
Keep stimulation low; follow infant cues.
Assessment
Observe and note: sustained engagement, sensory responses, early vocalisations, and attachment behaviours. Document using the Characteristics of Effective Learning framework (Playing and Exploring). Observe gaze, movement responses, calm engagement.
