All About Me Book: Identity Pages + Q&A

Materials

- Large manila envelopes (one per child)

- Thick cardstock or sugar paper cut into booklet pages

- Child-safe scissors

- Glue sticks

- Crayons, chunky markers, or paint sticks

- Pictures of the child's family members (from home)

- Pictures of the child

- Soft brush or cotton balls

- Smocks or old t shirts for messy art

Learning Objectives

- Children will identify and point to themselves in pictures.

- Children will engage in a simple question and answer about family members.

- Children will participate in a sensory art activity to decorate their book page.

- Children will begin to recognise their name (spoken or written).

Step-By-Step Instructions

1. Gather children and introduce the "All About Me" book project. Explain that everyone in their family is special and they will make a book to share.

2. Show children a pre-made example of one booklet page (e.g., with a family photo and some simple drawings).

3. Hand out a manila envelope to each child as their "special book cover." Ask them to say their name.

4. Give each child a few pieces of cardstock for their book pages. Show them a picture of themselves and ask them to point to "you!" Offer to glue their picture onto one page.

5. Next, show pictures of their family members one by one. Ask, "Who is this?" and prompt them to say the family member's name (e.g., "Mama," "Daddy," "Grandma"). Glue a family photo onto another page.

6. Set up an art station with crayons, markers, and the soft brushes or cotton balls. Encourage children to decorate their pages, perhaps drawing people or their home.

7. Offer the glue sticks and invite children to add more photos of their family or draw more pictures of who lives in their house.

8. As they finish, read the names aloud and ask simple questions like, "Is this your Grandpa?" or "Tell me about your family."

Educator Tip

This activity is about engagement and exploration, not perfection. For safety, supervise closely during the art portion, especially with glue sticks. You can also involve families by sending home a small prompt asking them to send in a favourite family photo to be included in their child's book.

Assessment

Observe children’s interactions with their photos. Note if they can point to themselves or a family member when asked. Listen for any verbal responses to family member names and questions. Document any attempts to use art materials or make marks on their pages.

Educator tip

Use choice questions; keep groups small.

Assessment

Observe and note: emerging independence, two-word combinations, imitation of actions, and early pretend play. Use Development Matters non-statutory guidance checkpoints. Observe participation, labelling.
