Safety scissors
Glue sticks
Pictures of family members (sent from home or printed)
Child scissors (if available and appropriate for the age group)
Stickers (optional)
A binder or large ring to hold the books together
Learning Objectives
Children will be able to identify and name at least two family members.
Children will be able to express their identity by drawing a picture of themselves and their family.
Children will engage in simple question and answer about their family members.
Children will practise fine motor skills like drawing, cutting, and gluing.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Gather the children and introduce the "All About Me Book" project. Explain that they will create a special book about themselves and their family, just like they have a family at home.
2. Distribute the large paper to each child. Ask them to draw a picture of themselves. Encourage them to think about what they look like at home.
3. Once drawings are complete, invite children to share who is in their family. Ask questions like, "Who do you live with at home?" and "Who is your [mommy/daddy/grandma]?"
4. Provide pre-cut pictures of family members (or allow children to carefully cut their own if ready). Help children glue one or two family member pictures onto their paper alongside their self-portrait.
5. For an additional page, have children draw their home or a favourite thing they do with their family.
6. Facilitate a gentle Q&A session, holding up each child's paper and asking them to point to different family members and say their name. "Can you show me your [brother/sister/dog]? What is their name?"
7. Once all pages are complete, use the binder or rings to assemble each child's "All About Me Book," creating a collection of family stories.
Educator Tip
Be mindful that family structures vary widely. Use inclusive language and acknowledge all types of families. For children who may not have readily available pictures, encourage them to draw their family members or describe them. You can also send home a quick note asking families to send in a photo for their child's book.
Assessment
Observe and listen to children as they draw and share about their families. Note their ability to name family members and to verbally express who is in their home. Collect the completed "All About Me" pages to see their artistic representations of themselves and their loved ones.
Educator tip
Include diverse family structures; celebrate uniqueness.
Assessment
Observe and note: ability to follow two-step instructions, use of new vocabulary in context, early problem-solving strategies, and sustained shared thinking episodes. Assess against Development Matters age-band expectations. Teacher checklist: engagement, ability to answer questions.
